Cappadocia Travel Guide —
Beyond the Balloons
Few places on Earth command as much awe as Cappadocia. This geological wonderland in central Turkey is a surreal landscape of "fairy chimneys", honeycombed hills, and vast subterranean cities that feel like they belong on another planet — where history isn't just found in books, but carved directly into the soft volcanic tuff of the Anatolian plateau.
Whether you're drifting silently in a hot air balloon at sunrise, exploring 1,500-year-old cave churches in the Göreme Open Air Museum, or hiking through the rose-tinted dust of the Red Valley, Cappadocia offers a sensory overload that very few destinations can match.

Why Cappadocia belongs on your travel list
Cappadocia isn't just a city or a park — it's a deep dive into human resilience. For centuries, locals carved homes, monasteries, and entire cities underground to escape invaders. Today, that heritage has been transformed into some of the world's most unique boutique experiences.
The case for going now: While popular, Cappadocia is vast. In 2026, the region is expanding its eco-tourism and trekking routes, allowing travellers to find solitude in valleys like Ihlara or Gomeda. With the Turkish Lira providing excellent value for international visitors, luxury cave suites are more accessible than ever.

Top things to do in Cappadocia
1. Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Flight
Floating over the Monks Valley as the sky turns from violet to gold is worth every penny. Pro tip: Book this for the first morning of your trip — flights are often cancelled due to wind and you'll need the following days as backup.
2. Descend into Derinkuyu Underground City
An engineering marvel that goes 8 levels deep, including stables, churches, and wineries — all carved into the rock. It's an eerie but fascinating glimpse into ancient defensive living.
3. Sunset at Rose Valley
The minerals in the rock turn a deep, glowing pink as the sun sets. Drive to the "Sunset Viewpoint" with a bottle of local Turasan wine. Arguably the most romantic spot in Turkey.
4. Explore the Ihlara Valley
A lush green canyon formed by the Melendiz River, featuring a 14km trail with dozens of ancient rock-cut churches hidden in the cliffs. Perfect for a cooler day of hiking.
