The 7 Best Hotels
in Santorini
Santorini exists in two realities. There is the island of postcard photographs โ whitewashed cubist villages spilling down the caldera cliff, infinity pools that appear to fall into the sea, sunsets photographed by ten thousand phones simultaneously โ and there is the actual, rather more complicated island where you live with the crowds, the uneven stair-climbs, and the genuinely staggering geological drama of a half-submerged volcano.
Hotel geography matters more here than almost anywhere else. Oia is iconic but extremely crowded; Fira is lively but busy; Imerovigli sits between them with the same caldera view and noticeably fewer crowds; Firostefani offers good value slightly further from the photograph. Our seven picks heavily favour Imerovigli and Firostefani โ the sophisticated traveller's bases.
Cavo Tagoo Santorini
If Instagram has shown you Santorini, it has probably shown you Cavo Tagoo โ the whitewashed architecture, the private pools carved into cliffs, the suites that sit above the Aegean with nothing but sky in front of them. The hotel is genuinely beautiful, service is polished, and the honeymoon suite is one of the most photographed hotel rooms in Europe. Expensive in the extreme; delivers on the promise.
- Suites with private plunge pools overlooking the caldera
- The Honeymoon Suite repeatedly called out as exceptional
- Highly polished service, complimentary in-room touches
- Beautiful restaurant terrace and signature pool area
Astra Suites
Consistently one of the highest-rated luxury hotels in Greece, Astra combines superb caldera views with staff that guests โ including many honeymooners โ name individually in their reviews. The rooms run slightly more traditional than Cavo Tagoo's minimalism, and some feature private plunge pools with a view of Skaros Rock. Breakfast delivered to your terrace is the standard, not a splurge.
- Breakfast delivered to your private terrace daily
- Rooms with private plunge pools and Skaros Rock views
- Named staff culture โ George, Max, Nick recur in reviews
- Quieter Imerovigli setting, steps from the caldera path
Grace Hotel, Auberge Collection
A small Auberge Collection property known for the quality of its quiet luxury โ less flashy than Cavo Tagoo, less traditional than Astra, with serene whitewashed architecture and an infinity pool facing the caldera directly. Noted as adults-oriented, not for families with young children. Service is gentle but thorough, and the location is impeccable.
- Infinity pool with direct caldera orientation
- Restrained, serene architecture and design
- Auberge Collection service standards
- Adult-oriented atmosphere (ask about policies)
Athina Luxury Suites
Suites cut into the cliff below Fira town, each with a stone soaking tub or plunge pool on a private terrace directly above the sea. The location โ inside Fira itself โ means shops, restaurants, and the funicular are a two-minute walk, which divides opinions: closer to the action but with more stairs and more people moving past. Breakfast to your terrace as standard.
- Private outdoor soaking tubs or plunge pools in each suite
- In Fira town โ walkable to cable car, restaurants, cafes
- Breakfast delivered to the terrace daily
- Many stairs, as is the norm for caldera hotels
Iconic Santorini
A small, design-forward hotel in Imerovigli with some of the most photogenic white Cycladic architecture on the island. Reviews note it is unambiguously stunning; some mention that service can feel slightly more design-hotel than warm-Greek-host. For travellers whose priority is the visual beauty of the property, it delivers strongly.
- Exceptionally photogenic Cycladic architecture and pool
- Personalised recommendations for dinners and boat days
- Caldera views from most rooms and the main pool
- Staff who help with airport breakfasts for early starts
Villa Fotini
A small owner-run hotel in Firostefani, where Maria has built a reputation as one of the warmest hosts in the Cyclades โ she waited for one traveller's delayed flight at night, and her breakfasts change daily in ways guests still reminisce about. The rooms are simple but spotless with individual balconies and Aegean views from most. Walkable caldera path to Fira.
- Owner-run with Maria's personally delivered breakfast
- Balconies with Aegean views in most rooms
- Three minutes to the Three Bells of Fira viewpoint
- Caldera walking path to Fira, ten minutes
Afrodete Hotel Santorini
A modest but well-run central Fira hotel with a genuinely welcoming front-desk manager (Angeliki is widely named) who helps with catamaran tours and transport. The rooms are cozy without caldera views โ you're here for the location and the price, not the panorama. A short walk from Fira's main square with its restaurants and the cable car.
- Warm personal service from owner-manager Angeliki
- Short walk from the centre of Fira and the cable car
- Clean, comfortable rooms with small outdoor tables
- Flexibility for catamaran bookings and transport help
How we chose these hotels
We held selections to 4.7โ minimum across a meaningful review base, with a strong preference for caldera-facing rooms. All picks are in Imerovigli, Firostefani, or Fira. We considered stair access โ these hotels have many stairs, by necessity โ and prioritised properties with named staff cultures (Greek hotel hospitality is the real differentiator).
We skipped Oia despite its fame. The density of day-trippers and cruise-ship tourists there makes staying inside the village a mixed experience, and the same caldera view is available from quieter villages. We also avoided the inland hotels around the airport and Kamari, which remove you from what Santorini is actually about.
When to visit Santorini
The caldera villages shine from late April through early June and September through mid-October. July and August are brutal on crowds and hotel rates; Oia's sunset becomes an endurance sport. November through March many caldera hotels close entirely, though a handful stay open for a quieter, cheaper, and occasionally rain-lashed winter visit that can be beautiful.
