The 7 Best Hotels
in Split

9 min read 📅 Verified April 2026 Hand-picked across budgets
Verified April 2026. Each hotel below was personally vetted by our editorial team. Always confirm availability and current rates with the property before booking.

Split is the city that lives inside a Roman palace. Diocletian built his retirement home here in the fourth century; when the empire fell, refugees moved in, and the palace was never abandoned — three thousand people still live, run cafés, and dry laundry inside its walls today. The result is an extraordinary layer cake of Roman, medieval, Venetian, and present-day Croatian life, with the Adriatic lapping at the Riva.

Two geographies matter: inside Diocletian's Palace, where the hotels are small, character-filled, and logistically challenging (carrying luggage on cobbled alleys with no cars allowed); and just outside the walls, where larger hotels offer spas and pools with a five-minute walk into the historic centre. Our seven picks span both, heavily weighted toward palace addresses.

No. 01
💎 Editor's pick · Rooftop pool with Diocletian views

Cornaro Hotel Split

Just outside the walls · 153 rooms · €260–450 / night

A thoughtfully designed modern hotel immediately outside Diocletian's Palace, with a rooftop pool and bar that look straight into the historic centre. The breakfast is elaborate, the basement spa is genuinely good (with private sauna bookings), and the rooms are spacious by Split standards. The best combination of full-service hotel and walk-in Old Town access.

Best for — Travellers who want full-service amenities with a two-minute walk into the palace.
  • Rooftop plunge pool and bar with views over Diocletian
  • Basement spa with private saunas and jacuzzi
  • Elaborate breakfast buffet with extensive hot options
  • Spacious rooms, uncommon in central Split
No. 02
💎 MGallery in a restored heritage building

Heritage Hotel FERMAI Split - MGallery Collection

Just outside the walls · 49 rooms · €230–420 / night

Recently restored under Accor's MGallery brand, FERMAI pairs a beautifully refurbished heritage building with the kind of dining and service you expect from a serious boutique hotel. The restaurant is consistently called spectacular in reviews (even for small details like birthday surprises), and the five-minute walk into the palace keeps you connected without the logistical friction of staying inside.

Best for — Travellers who want a restored heritage hotel with a genuinely good on-site restaurant.
  • Recent restoration with elegant contemporary interiors
  • Well-regarded restaurant with à la carte and buffet breakfasts
  • Five-minute walk to Diocletian's Palace
  • Personal touches (birthday cakes repeatedly mentioned)
No. 03
⭐ Rooms carved into the palace walls

Antique Split Luxury Rooms

Inside Diocletian's Palace · 10 rooms · €180–320 / night

A small heritage hotel inside the palace where the walls of your bedroom are literally 1,700-year-old Roman stone. Staff (Ana, Ante, Jan, and Ivan are named in practically every review) make the challenging palace logistics completely painless — from luggage help at the parking spot to map-based local guidance. The breakfast is made to order. A genuine one-of-one stay.

Best for — Travellers who will never again have the chance to sleep inside a Roman emperor's palace.
  • Room walls made from original Roman palace stone
  • Staff personally assist with luggage from parking
  • Made-to-order breakfast with local specialties
  • Inside the palace — quiet after tourists leave
No. 04
⭐ Modern rooms inside ancient walls

Murum Boutique Rooms

Inside Diocletian's Palace · 9 rooms · €160–280 / night

Murum — Latin for wall — takes the defining feature of Diocletian's Palace and builds its aesthetic around it. Modern rooms with exposed original walls, a sleek contemporary fit-out, and staff (Adriajana is named repeatedly) who handle the palace's logistics calmly. The courtyard breakfast is generous and the location is central to the palace's best restaurants.

Best for — Design-minded travellers who want contemporary interiors inside the historic walls.
  • Modern fit-out showcasing original Roman palace walls
  • Inside the palace, minutes from Peristyle and Stradun
  • Generous breakfast served in the property's courtyard
  • Staff actively handle parking and luggage logistics
No. 05
⭐ Solid central boutique near the Riva

Hotel Luxe Split

Just outside the walls · 30 rooms · €150–250 / night

A traditional building internally renovated to a modern standard, two hundred metres from the harbour and the palace. The rooms are spacious and many have sea views; the small basement gym, sauna, and spa add real value. Noted caveat: one jacuzzi has been flagged as unreliable in reviews, so if that amenity matters to you, confirm before booking.

Best for — Travellers who want a sea-view room at a mid-range price, close to the palace and ferries.
  • Two hundred metres from the Riva and Old Town
  • Many rooms with sea and cruise-ship views
  • Basement gym, sauna, and spa area
  • Consistently friendly reception for restaurant tips
No. 06
💰 Best social hostel near the palace

Hurricane Hostel

Zagrebačka (five minutes from palace) · Dorms & private rooms · €35–80 / night

A five-minute walk from Diocletian's palace and the Old Town bars, Hurricane is the reliable social hostel in central Split — warm staff, reasonably comfortable beds, a good mix of travellers, and affordable rates even in high season. Not a party hostel per se, but certainly not a silent-retreat one either. Budget travellers reliably name it as their favourite in Croatia.

Best for — Solo travellers and backpackers who want a sociable base five minutes from the palace.
  • Five minutes on foot to Diocletian's Palace
  • Good balance of social scene without being disruptive
  • Comfortable beds and thoughtful staff assistance
  • Kitchen and communal spaces for cooking and mingling
No. 07
💰 Best value boutique rooms by the beach

Luxury Rooms Near the Beach

Žnjan (beach) · 4 rooms · €80–140 / night

A small four-room guesthouse two minutes from the beach and ten minutes by taxi from the Old Town. The rooms are genuinely well-appointed — marble bathrooms, air conditioning, small kitchen cooktops — and the host Katharina personally meets arrivals at the door. Not the choice if you want to walk to the palace, but exceptional value if beach mornings matter more.

Best for — Summer travellers who will beach during the day and taxi into the Old Town at night.
  • Two-minute walk to Žnjan beach
  • Marble bathrooms and genuine boutique finish level
  • Small in-room kitchen cooktops
  • Free parking and owner Katharina's personal welcome

How we chose these hotels

We held selections to 4.6★ minimum for larger hotels and 4.8★ for small boutiques. Every pick is either inside Diocletian's Palace or within a five-minute walk. We gave priority to properties with named staff cultures and that actively help with the practical reality of staying inside the walls — luggage assistance, parking coordination, and restaurant reservations.

We skipped the waterfront resort hotels further east (toward Žnjan beach) — fine for families but disconnected from the palace life that makes Split distinctive. We also avoided the party-oriented hostels in the Varoš area; a quick scan of reviews suggests better options exist at similar prices.

When to visit Split

Split is best from May through June and from September through early October. Summer is hot and crowded; the palace fills with day-trippers off the ferries. Winter is quieter and mild (10–15°C), with most restaurants and hotels open. Split also functions as a gateway to Hvar, Brač, and the Dalmatian islands, which heavily shapes its summer rhythm.
